The purifier is on the table, it is switched on, and the room still smells
The complaint is always the same shape. Usually nothing is broken. The unit is doing its job on the part of the problem it can actually reach — and there are three parts, only one of which it was ever going to catch.
Where the smell is actually coming from
The cigarette resting in the tray. This is the big one, and it surprises people. A cigarette left burning between draws produces a slow, continuous plume for minutes at a time and, unlike the smoke you exhale, nobody is doing anything with it. It rises straight into the room. In a room where someone is smoking and setting the cigarette down between draws, most of what you can smell came off the tray rather than out of a person.
What you exhale. Less than you would think, and it goes wherever you happen to be facing.
What has already settled. Smoke residue lands on soft things — curtains, a sofa, a rug, your own clothes — and then gives the smell back slowly for days afterwards. This is why a room can smell of smoke when nobody has smoked in it since yesterday.
What an ashtray air purifier does
It is a fan, a bed of activated carbon and a HEPA element in a small box. The fan pulls air down through the tray instead of letting it rise. The HEPA takes the particles; the carbon takes the odour molecules, which are a different problem needing a different material. A desktop unit like the smart ashtray air purifier does both in one housing.
Aimed at the first source on that list — the resting cigarette — it works, and it is the only thing that does. That plume is the one part of the smell you can capture at the source, before it is in the room at all.
What it does not do, said plainly
It is not room ventilation. Its capture zone is a few centimetres wide. Smoke exhaled across the table is not going near the filter and never will, and no desktop unit will change that. Bought as "a purifier for the room", it will disappoint. Bought as "the thing that stops a resting cigarette scenting the whole flat", it is genuinely good.
It does nothing about residue already in the curtains. That is a cleaning and airing problem, not a filtering one.
The four things that actually fix the rest
- Put it where the cigarette rests. Not across the table, and not behind the ashtray you are actually using. Capture happens at the source or it does not happen.
- Empty it. Cold ash and a cold stub keep releasing smell whether the fan is running or not, and a full tray blocks the airflow the whole thing depends on. This alone fixes more complaints than any purchase.
- Change the carbon when the smell comes back. The most common misdiagnosis by a distance: the fan still sounds normal, so the unit seems fine, but carbon has a finite capacity and simply fills up. If it worked in month one and does not in month six, and it still hums, it is the carbon. The same goes for the HEPA, which clogs and quietly strangles the airflow.
- Move air out of the room, not around it. A purifier recirculates; it cannot remove what it does not draw in. An open window on the far side of the room from the door does more for a smoky room in five minutes than any desktop unit does in an hour.
That last point is the same principle that governs keeping a grow tent from smelling out a house — smell escapes because air is being pushed out somewhere you are not watching, and the fix is always to decide which way the air goes rather than to filter harder.
Water pipes, since it comes up
The water cools the smoke and catches some of the heavier particulate. That is all it does. A smoother draw is not a cleaner one, and that is worth knowing rather than assuming otherwise. What matters for smell is simpler: change the water every single time. Standing water is the entire reason a metal and glass water pipe smells when nobody has used it, and it starts within a day.
The short version
Most of the smell is the cigarette you put down. A purifier catches that and only that, as long as it is close enough, empty, and its carbon is not full. Everything else is airing the room and washing the soft furnishings.
