The tent is zipped. The door is shut. And you can still tell from the top of the stairs.
This is the problem people are quietly most worried about, and it is almost never solved by buying a stronger smell-killer. It is solved by understanding one thing about how air behaves — after which the fix is cheap, permanent and mostly free.
Smell does not leak. Air leaks, and smell rides it.
Odour molecules do not drift through zips on their own. They are carried by moving air. So the question is never "how do I trap the smell" — it is which way is the air in that tent travelling?
If more air is being pushed into your tent than is being pulled out, the tent is under positive pressure. It is slightly inflated. And air under pressure leaves through every route available: the zip teeth, the cable ports, the seams, the gap where the ducting meets the wall. None of those routes goes through a filter, so all of that air arrives in your house carrying everything it picked up inside.
Air fresheners do nothing about this. Neither do gels, sprays or bowls of coffee beans. They add a smell on top of a smell, which anyone walking in recognises instantly.
The fix: pull, do not push
Extract air out of the tent, through carbon, and let the tent draw its replacement air in passively through its own vents.
Now the tent is under slight negative pressure. The walls suck in a little — you can see it. Every gap that used to be an exit is now an entrance, and the only way for air to leave is through the filter. That is the whole trick, and it costs nothing extra once the parts are the right way round.
The order, top to bottom: carbon filter inside the tent, fan after it, then ducting out. Air is pulled through the carbon before it reaches the fan and leaves.
Fan first and filter after is the single most common wiring of this, and it is backwards. It pressurises the tent and pushes unfiltered air out through every seam on the way.
Speed matters more than power
Carbon needs contact time. Air that rockets through the bed too fast does not get scrubbed properly, no matter how good the carbon is — so a fan running flat out through a modest filter can smell worse than a gentle fan through a generous one.
This is where a speed-controllable fan earns its place. The 6 Inch EC Inline Duct Fan can be turned down, and turned down is usually where it should live: enough to hold the tent walls slightly inward, and no more. Quieter, kinder to the carbon, cheaper to run, and it works better.
If you can hear your extraction from another room, it is almost certainly set higher than it needs to be.
The four gaps everyone forgets
The cable ports. Those elasticated sleeves are meant to be cinched around the cable and folded over. Left gaping, they are a hole straight into your room.
The ducting joints. Duct clamped loosely onto a flange leaks at exactly the point where the air is most concentrated. Clamp it properly, then tape the joint. The 4 & 6 Inch Flexible Ducting Hose ships with two clamps, which saves finding them separately.
Where the duct leaves the room. If it goes through a window board or a vent, seal round it. Otherwise the extracted air comes straight back in beside the duct.
The tent door, when you open it. Nothing prevents this one — a full tent's worth of air comes out with you. Open it briefly, and not when someone has just arrived.
When a setup that used to be sealed starts to smell
If nothing has changed and the smell has come back, work through these in order:
- The pre-filter sleeve. Clogged with dust, it strangles airflow and the tent quietly goes positive. Take it off and wash it.
- The carbon itself. It fills up. High humidity uses it faster. Carbon is a consumable, not a fixture.
- A new gap. A cable moved, a clamp loosened, a duct knocked. Run your hand around the seams with the fan going and feel for air going the wrong way.
The short version
Filter inside, fan pulling through it, tent walls drawn slightly inward, ducting short and sealed, fan turned down rather than up. Wash the pre-filter, replace the carbon when it is spent.
Get that right and the honest answer to "can you smell it?" becomes no — not from the landing, not from the front door, and not from next door either.
