Why are my leaves curling at the edges?

Your leaves are curling and you want to know why before you spend anything

You have noticed the edges of your leaves rolling upward, or sometimes cupping downward, and something feels wrong. That instinct is right — curling is a stress response, and it does not go away on its own. The good news is that each cause has a distinct look, and once you can see which one it is, the fix is usually straightforward.

Work through these in order. Start with the easiest thing to measure and rule out before moving to the next.

Heat — check this first

Heat stress produces a very specific curl: the leaf edges roll upward and inward along the length of the leaf, sometimes described as a taco shape. The tips may also look slightly bleached or papery if the light source is close. Run your hand slowly across the canopy. If you feel warmth radiating down, the temperature at leaf level is almost certainly higher than the reading your thermometer gives at pot level.

Put your thermometer at canopy height and leave it there for an hour. Anything consistently above 28°C in the growing space is enough to cause this. The fixes, in order of effort: raise your light if there is headroom, reduce its output if it is dimmable, or increase the rate at which hot air is being pulled out of the space. That last one is usually the most effective and is worth looking at alongside airflow below.

Low humidity — often overlooked

When the air is too dry, leaves curl upward at the edges as the plant tries to reduce the surface area losing moisture. This looks similar to heat stress but tends to affect the whole plant evenly rather than the top of the canopy first. Check your humidity reading. For established plants in vegetative growth, below 40% relative humidity is where this usually starts. Seedlings and young plants want it higher still, closer to 60–70%.

If your space is genuinely too dry — particularly in winter when indoor heating strips moisture from the air — adding humidity is the direct fix. A humidifier sized for your space will hold a consistent level without you having to mist manually or prop wet towels near fans. Airflow — too much or too little

Poor airflow creates hot and humid pockets around leaves, which leads to curling and worse. But a fan blasting directly at one part of the canopy can also cause windburn, which curls the affected leaves persistently in one direction. The leaves closest to the fan will look worse than those on the other side of the plant.

Good airflow means gentle, consistent movement across the whole canopy — enough that leaves shimmer slightly but do not bend. If your only circulation fan is pointing straight at your plants from 20 centimetres away, move it back or redirect it so it is bouncing air off a wall first. If you have no internal circulation at all and rely only on your extraction fan, that is not enough. A clip fan with oscillation will cover more of the canopy and avoid concentrating the airflow in one spot. On the extraction side: if your inline fan is running at full speed continuously regardless of temperature and humidity, you are likely over-extracting and making both heat and low humidity problems harder to manage. Watering — both over and under do this

Overwatering causes downward cupping, particularly in lower and middle leaves. The leaf surface looks dark and feels slightly thick or stiff. Pick the pot up. If it is heavy and the top 2–3 centimetres of soil are still damp, leave it alone. Roots sitting in wet soil cannot take up oxygen, and the plant shows it in the leaves.

Underwatering produces upward curling and wilting, and the pot will feel noticeably light. The soil surface will be dry and may have pulled away from the sides of the pot. Water slowly and evenly until it runs from the drainage holes, then wait for the pot to lighten again before the next watering. You do not need to buy anything for either of these — lift the pot, look at the soil, and adjust your schedule.

Nutrients — the last thing to reach for

Excess nitrogen in particular causes leaves to curl downward and take on a very dark, almost clawing appearance. It is easy to blame nutrients early, but heat, humidity, and watering issues look similar and are more common. Only reach for a feed explanation once you have ruled everything else out. If you are already feeding at the manufacturer's recommended rate, try reducing it before adding more of anything.

Also check your pH if you are measuring it. Nutrient lockout caused by pH being outside the correct range can mimic deficiency and cause stress curling even when everything else looks right. Soil works best between 6.0 and 7.0; most hydroponic systems want 5.5 to 6.5. A digital pH meter and the correct pH adjustment solution cost very little and remove a lot of guesswork.

The one thing to do next

Put your thermometer and humidity sensor at canopy height right now, leave it for an hour, and write down what you see. That single reading will tell you whether you are dealing with a heat problem, a humidity problem, or neither — and it will save you from guessing wrong and buying something you do not need.
