You've got a thermometer-hygrometer clipped inside your tent and you're staring at a number, wondering whether it's fine or quietly causing problems. The answer depends almost entirely on what stage of growth your plants are at — and on the temperature reading sitting right next to it.
Target humidity by growth stage
These are the ranges that work for most plants grown indoors under artificial light. They aren't rigid ceilings, but drifting far outside them for extended periods causes real, visible damage.
Seedlings and early propagation
Aim for 70–80% relative humidity (RH). At this stage roots are either absent or underdeveloped, so the plant takes on much of its water through its leaves. Low humidity here stresses the plant before it has any real defense against it. Many growers use a propagator lid or a clear plastic dome to keep humidity stable without needing to humidify the whole tent.
Vegetative growth
Drop to 50–70% RH. The root system is now doing the bulk of water uptake, and the plant can handle a wider range. Keeping it somewhere in the middle of this window — around 60% — gives you a useful buffer in both directions. This is the most forgiving stage for humidity management.
Early to mid flowering
Bring it down to 40–50% RH. Once flowers begin forming, dense clusters of plant matter create pockets of still, moist air even when your tent's ambient reading looks fine. That gap between ambient and what's happening inside a dense canopy is where problems start.
Late flowering
Aim for 35–45% RH, and some growers push it lower still in the final two weeks. This is the stage where humidity matters most, because the risk from excess moisture is at its highest. Keep airflow consistent and check readings at canopy level, not just at tent height.
What goes wrong at each extreme
Too high
High humidity slows transpiration — the process by which plants draw water and nutrients up from their roots. In vegetative growth this mostly just slows things down. In flowering, persistently high humidity creates the conditions for fungal issues, which can spread through a canopy quickly and are difficult to reverse once established. You'll often see the first signs at the densest parts of the plant.
Too low
Low humidity forces the plant to close its stomata — the tiny pores through which it exchanges gases and releases moisture. When stomata close, photosynthesis slows, growth stalls, and the plant starts to show stress: leaf edges curl or crisp up, and young growth looks fragile. Seedlings are particularly vulnerable because they can desiccate before a root system develops enough to compensate.
Why temperature and humidity can't be separated
Relative humidity is a ratio — the amount of moisture in the air as a percentage of the maximum that air could hold at that temperature. Warm air holds more moisture than cold air. This means your humidity reading will change as your lights heat the tent, even if no actual water has been added or removed.
The more useful concept is vapour pressure deficit (VPD), which describes the difference between how much moisture the air currently holds and how much it could hold. A high VPD means the air is relatively dry and will pull moisture from the plant aggressively. A low VPD means the air is close to saturation and transpiration slows almost to a stop.
In practical terms: a reading of 60% RH at 20°C is a very different environment from 60% RH at 28°C. When you're dialling in your tent, always read temperature and humidity together. Most digital hygrometers show both on the same display — if yours doesn't, replace it.
Target VPD ranges are roughly 0.4–0.8 kPa in propagation, 0.8–1.2 kPa in veg, and 1.2–1.6 kPa in flower. Free VPD charts are widely available online and are worth printing out and keeping near your tent.
The cheapest way to actually control humidity
Raising humidity
Improving your extraction is almost always step one — but sometimes the tent is genuinely too dry, particularly in heated rooms during winter when central heating strips moisture from the air. If your readings are consistently sitting below your target range, a humidifier running on a timer or a basic plug-in hygrostat is the most reliable fix. Lowering humidity
Increase your extraction fan speed first — this is free if you already have variable speed control. Make sure passive intake holes are unobstructed, because a tent that can't draw fresh air in will struggle to push humid air out. If extraction is already at full capacity and humidity remains high, a small dehumidifier or a second fan circulating air within the canopy will help. In late flowering especially, oscillating fans pointed at the canopy do meaningful work.
The one thing worth doing next
If you don't already have a min/max hygrometer logging your overnight readings, get one and put it at canopy level. Lights-off periods are when humidity typically climbs — temperature drops, transpiration continues, and extraction is often turned down. Most humidity problems in flowering happen in the dark, and you won't know until you can see what's recorded while you weren't watching.
