How Do I Match a Carbon Filter to My Fan?

You buy a fan. You buy a filter. They arrive, and one of three things happens: they physically do not fit together, or they fit but the airflow collapses to a whisper, or you get it all connected and the smell is still in the hallway.

All three come from the same place — a filter and a fan are a pair, and they have to be chosen as one. Here is how to do that properly, in the order that matters.

Step one: match the flange, not the tent

The flange is the collar the ducting clamps onto. Fans and filters are sold by that diameter — 4 inch, 6 inch, 8 inch — and the number has to match. A 6 inch fan and a 4 inch filter do not join, and no amount of tape makes that a good idea.

This is where people trip up, because they choose the fan for their tent size and then buy whichever filter looks about right. Choose the fan first, read its flange size off the listing, then buy the filter to that number.

Step two: the filter must be able to keep up with the fan

This is the one almost nobody is told, and it is the reason for the "collapsed to a whisper" problem.

A carbon filter is a restriction. Air has to be pulled through a packed bed of carbon, and that costs you pressure. A fan rated at a given airflow in open air will always move less through a filter and a length of ducting — that is normal and expected, not a fault.

What is not normal is pairing a strong fan with an undersized filter. Two things go wrong at once. The airflow chokes, so your tent gets hot and stuffy anyway. And the air that does get through is travelling too fast through too little carbon to actually be scrubbed, so you lose the smell control you bought the filter for.

The rule of thumb is simple: the filter's rated airflow should be equal to or higher than the fan's. Never the other way round. If anything, err towards a slightly larger filter — a big filter on a modest fan is quiet, effective and long-lived.

Step three: which way round they go

The filter goes inside the tent, at the top, and the fan pulls air through it and out. Filter first, then fan, then ducting to wherever the air is going.

Not the other way round. If you push air through the filter instead of pulling it, the tent is under positive pressure the whole time — which means every seam, zip and cable port is now an exit for smelly air that never went near the carbon.

Pulling air out puts the tent under slight negative pressure. The walls suck in very slightly. Every gap becomes an inlet, and the only way out is through the carbon. That single change does more for smell control than any amount of extra filtering.

What to pair with what

For a typical home tent, the 6 Inch EC Inline Duct Fan and a 6 inch filter is the standard, sensible pairing. The EC motor matters here: it is speed-controllable, so you can run it well below full tilt. A fan running gently through a generous filter is quiet, gives the carbon time to work, and lasts longer than one screaming at maximum all day.

Three things that quietly ruin a good pairing

Crushed or endlessly long ducting. Every bend and every metre costs you airflow. Keep the run short and the curves gentle. A duct folded round a sharp corner can cost you more than a filter ever will. A neglected pre-filter. The fabric sleeve on the outside of the filter catches dust before it reaches the carbon. It is meant to be taken off and washed. Left clogged, it strangles the airflow and everyone blames the fan.

Expecting carbon to last forever. It does not. Carbon gradually fills up, and how fast depends on how much air and how much humidity has gone through it. When smell starts escaping a setup that used to be sealed, and nothing else has changed, the carbon is usually the answer.

The short version

Match the flange number. Make sure the filter is rated at or above the fan. Put the filter inside, pull air through it, and keep the ducting short. Get those four right and the pairing simply works — quietly, and without anyone in the house knowing what you are growing.
