You're wondering whether the water from your tap is quietly ruining things
It's a fair concern. You've spent money on decent kit, you're doing everything else right, and you're staring at your plants wondering whether the water you've been giving them is part of the problem. Here's the honest answer: it might be, it might not be, and the only way to know for certain is to measure it.
What's actually in UK tap water
Two things tend to matter for plants: chlorine and hardness.
Chlorine is added by water companies to make tap water safe to drink. At the concentrations used in the UK, it's unlikely to cause serious damage to most plants, but it can affect the microbial life in soil over time. The good news is that chlorine is volatile — if you fill a watering can and leave it uncovered overnight, most of the chlorine will off-gas on its own. No product required. That one habit is genuinely worth forming.
Hardness is a different matter entirely. Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium carbonates, picked up as the water passes through chalk and limestone rock. The UK is split roughly in two: the south and east tend to have hard to very hard water, while much of the north, Wales and Scotland tend to be softer. If you're in London, the East Midlands or East Anglia, your tap water is likely quite hard. If you're in Manchester, Glasgow or most of Wales, it's probably much softer.
Hardness raises two issues. First, it pushes the pH of your water up — often above 7.5, sometimes higher. Second, it contributes to your total dissolved solids (TDS), meaning your water already contains minerals before you add anything to it. Neither of these is automatically catastrophic, but both are things you want to know about rather than guess at.
Why leaving it to stand doesn't fix the hardness
This is probably the most common misconception worth clearing up. Leaving tap water out overnight does help with chlorine. It does nothing at all for hardness or pH. The calcium and magnesium that make water hard are not volatile — they don't evaporate. If your tap water comes out at pH 7.8, it will still be pH 7.8 twenty-four hours later. If your TDS is 400 parts per million before you add anything, standing water won't change that.
When it matters and when it doesn't
In plain soil, with plants that aren't particularly sensitive, moderately hard water at a slightly elevated pH is often tolerable. Soil has natural buffering capacity, meaning it resists sudden pH swings. If your plants are growing steadily, showing good colour and responding well, the water may simply not be an issue worth chasing.
Where hardness and pH start to matter more:
- Hydroponics and coco. There's no soil buffer. The pH of your water is much closer to the pH your roots actually experience. A mismatch here locks out nutrients — the plant can't absorb what's there even if you've added it correctly.
- Sensitive plants with specific pH preferences. If a plant wants an acidic root zone and your water is consistently alkaline, you'll fight that battle every watering.
- When you're already adding nutrients. If your starting water already carries a significant mineral load, the nutrients you add on top push TDS higher than you might intend. What you think you're feeding may not match what's actually in the solution.
The wrong tool for the job
Paper pH strips are cheap and widely sold, and they are genuinely poor at this task. They're hard to read accurately, they degrade once the packet is opened, and they can't tell you anything about TDS or EC at all. If you're making decisions about your water based on a colour match against a printed chart, you're guessing with an extra step.
A digital meter gives you a number. Numbers are actionable. What you can do about hard water
If you measure and find your water is genuinely problematic, the options are straightforward:
- pH-down solutions bring the pH of your water down before watering. They're widely available and a small amount goes a long way. You add, measure again, adjust until you hit your target range.
- Mixing with collected rainwater dilutes both hardness and pH. Rainwater in the UK is naturally soft and slightly acidic — often around pH 5.5 to 6.5. A mix of tap and rainwater can land you somewhere sensible without buying anything extra.
- Filtered or reverse osmosis water removes almost everything and gives you a blank slate to work from. The trade-off is cost and setup — RO systems produce water slowly and waste some in the process.
The one thing worth doing next
Test your tap water before you change anything. Fill a glass, let it sit for ten minutes to reach room temperature, and measure the pH and TDS. You may find you have nothing to fix. You may find a clear and specific problem. Either way, you'll be working from fact rather than anxiety — and that's a better place to start than anything else you could do today.
