"I can just turn it on and off myself, can't I?"

Yes, you can. And for the first few days you probably will. The question is whether you will still be doing it accurately at 11 pm on a Thursday three weeks in, when you have already gone to bed and the light has been on for an extra two hours without you noticing.

What plants are actually measuring

Plants do not just use light to grow — they use darkness to make decisions. Many species use the length of the uninterrupted dark period as a signal for what to do next: stay in vegetative growth, begin flowering, or hold where they are. This means the dark half of the cycle is not downtime. It is active biology, and interrupting it — even briefly, even with a torch — can confuse or reset the process entirely.

This is why consistency matters more than intensity. A plant under a modest light on a rock-solid 18-hour day will almost always outperform the same plant under a brighter light on a wandering schedule. The schedule is the foundation everything else sits on.

How many hours, by stage

These are the widely used starting points. They are not magic numbers, but they are well-established for most common indoor plants and give you a sensible place to begin.

  • Seedlings and clones: 18 hours of light, 6 hours of darkness. Some growers run 20/4 for seedlings, but 18/6 is gentler and still fast.
  • Vegetative growth: 18 hours of light, 6 hours of darkness. Keep this consistent throughout the stage.
  • Flowering (for day-length-sensitive plants): 12 hours of light, 12 hours of darkness. The 12-hour dark period must be unbroken. Any light leak during that window can cause problems.

If you are growing plants that are not day-length sensitive — many herbs, lettuce, and similar — you can run 16 to 18 hours throughout the entire grow without worrying about a flowering trigger. The simpler the biology, the more forgiving the schedule.

What happens when the schedule wanders

A plant on a shifting schedule is a plant under low-level, chronic stress. You will not always see it dramatically. More often it shows as uneven growth, slower progress than expected, or — in day-length-sensitive species — failure to transition when you want it to, or an early transition you did not ask for.

The problem with doing it by hand is not intention, it is accumulation. One day the light goes on 40 minutes late. Another day you forget the evening switch-off until midnight. Over four weeks, that adds up to a schedule that looks nothing like the one you planned. The plant has been living through all of it.

The honest case for a timer

A basic plug-in mechanical timer costs very little and removes the problem entirely. You set it once, it runs the same cycle every day without any further thought from you, and the plant gets what it needs whether you are home or not.

If you already have a digital timer — even an old one from a lamp or a heating system — test it, set it correctly, and use it. You do not need to buy anything. The function is what matters, not the device.

Where a timer becomes more than a convenience is when you are also managing the light itself. A dimmable light, for example, gives you control over intensity at each stage — lower for seedlings, higher as the plant grows. Darkness matters as much as light — treat it the same way

Once you have the on/off schedule sorted, check your dark period for leaks. Open the grow space during the dark period and stand inside it with the door closed for a minute. Let your eyes adjust. Any light you can see — from a fan indicator, a cable gap, a poorly sealed zip — is light the plant can see too. Seal what you find with black tape or rearrange cables so indicator lights face away from the canopy.

This step costs nothing and is one of the most overlooked parts of getting a consistent grow.

One thing worth doing next

Before you adjust anything else — nutrients, watering, training — write down the schedule you intend to run: lights on at what time, lights off at what time, how many hours of each. Then set a timer to match it exactly. Check the timer is running correctly after 24 hours. That is it.
